INTEGRATED CIRCUIT TOPOGRAPHY

The Integrated Circuit Topography Act specifically protects the design of elements and interconnections of integrated circuitry products.  In this form of protection, the owner of an original topographic layout of circuit components is granted exclusive rights to reproduce the topography, manufacture an integrated circuit product incorporating the topography, and import and exploit the topography and the integrated circuit device.

Rights under the Act are granted through the Intellectual Property Office where applicable.  For valid registration, the topography must be original, and application must be filed within a two-year grace period from the date of the first commercial exploitation of the topography.  Additionally, the creator must be a national of an eligible country, or the topography must have been commercially exploited first in that nation where applicable.  The Act protects registered circuit topographies for up to ten years.

The Integrated Circuit Topography Act is one of the three forms of intellectual property protection available for integrated circuitry, the others being patent and copyright laws.
